The 12th Attakkalari India Biennial presents a contemporary dance productions by Italian choreographer Raphael Bianco, “LEONARDO DA VINCI – SPIRITUALS ANATOMY”, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Mumbai, Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru. These works are produced by Fondazione Egri CRID with EgriBiancoDanza Company, in partnership with Fondazione CROSS and with support from MiC, Regione Piemonte, Fondazione CRT.

“Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomie Spirituali” commemorates the genius of Leonardo da Vinci on the 500th anniversary of his death. It serves as a tribute to the great inventor, scientist, author, and humanist. This choreographic work navigates the tension between stillness and motion, allowing significance to emerge without a deliberate narrative. Our body, composed of flesh and blood, is guided by the mind and animated by the heart. However, upon deeper reflection, we may question our relationship with the various parts of our bodies: Which areas do we prefer to conceal? Which do we embrace? Which parts present themselves to the world, and which should be kept hidden? Where do we find strength and energy, and where do we experience fragility?
This piece offers an exploration of the dancer’s body, resembling an anatomical dissection. It is a choreographic journey with esoteric perspectives, creating a mysterious ritual that produces fleeting images that can be upsetting, surreal, joyful, comedic, or poetic. The creative process unfolds through a multimedia experience, featuring minimalistic music by Alessandro Cortini, sounds from nature (which Leonardo favored), and echoes of Renaissance music that draw inspiration from Leonardo’s anatomy sketches. This is not merely an exercise in style but a profound investigation into life and its gradual decline.

Raphael Bianco
Raphael Bianco, born in Mumbai, is a trained dancer and choreographer with diverse expertise in both classical and contemporary dance. His studies in choreographic composition included the theories of Laban, guided by renowned mentors Susanna Egri and Karin Wahener. He has performed with the Norwegian Contemporary Dance Company Carte Blanche and had a brief experience with the Ensemble of Micha Van Hoecke. Currently, he dances with the Ballet du Nord, which is the National Choreographic Centre of Roubaix in France. In 1999, Raphael returned to Italy and co-founded the Compagnia EgriBiancoDanza with Susanna Egri. As a choreographer, he embraces eclecticism as his artistic philosophy, dedicating each project to unique poetic and aesthetic explorations. Recently, however, his work has become more focused, abstract, and visionary, emphasizing the infinite possibilities of the body and movement. Raphael draws inspiration from political and social themes as well as the depths of the human soul, placing human experience at the center of his choreographic investigations.

Compagnia EgriBiancoDanza
