Attakkalari India Biennial 2013

South Asia's largest international contemporary dance and movement arts festival

Attakkalari India Biennial, considered South Asia's largest international contemporary dance and movement arts festival, is scheduled to be held from January 25 to February 3, 2013. This edition of the Biennial is conceived around the theme of Frames of Dance, which will feature performers and delegates from countries across the globe that include Austria, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, South Korea, UK, US and of course India.

Over the five editions, the Attakkalari India Biennial has emerged as a unique platform for unsullied contemporary movement arts. The Biennial has and continues to serve as a forum for exchange of knowledge and expertise in dance, design and research. Artists from various parts of the world come together to present their work, share their experiences, exchange ideas, explore new territories and throw open a dynamic space for creative expression through performance, network and collaboration.

The Biennial is supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council, iDAS nrw, tanzhaus nrw, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of Culture- Government of India, British Council, Oz Fest, InKo Centre, Arts Council Korea, Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, Embassy of France, Bonjour India, Japan Foundation, swissnex and Consulate-General of The Netherlands.

The festival opens with the critically-acclaimed The Manganiyar Seduction directed by Roysten Abel at the Jayamahal Palace Hotel grounds. FACETS - Choreography Residency

Arts-in-education is a strong focal point of Attakkalari India Biennial 2013. The festival unofficially kicks off on December 5, 2012 with FACETS, a choreography residency for young choreographers from all over the world. 16 young choreographers, selected from over 180 applicants from all over the world, will work in Bangalore for six weeks to create new work to be premiered at Attakkalari India Biennial 2013.

    • Platform 13: Emerging South Asia

    As the largest contemporary dance festival in South Asia, there is a dedicated platform for emerging artists from the South Asia region namely Diya Naidu, Ronita Mookerji, Hemabharathy Palani, Tushar Kalia, Mayuka Ueno Gayer, Venuri Perera, Shabbir Ahmed Khan and Preethi Athreya to give short presentations on their process, their future projects and short showings of their present work to various stakeholders in the field of dance.

    • Time Frames- installation.

    Attakkalari in association with British Council will present Time Frames. 100 school children from Delhi Public School, Kanakapura; Parikrma Foundation, GEAR Foundation, Bangalore School of Speech and Drama and Attakkalari s Community Class are working with dancers from Attakkalari s Repertory Dance Company and the Australian-British, media artist Margie Medlin to create a performative installation.
