The 12th Attakkalari India Biennial presents a contemporary dance production by Italian choreographer Raphael Bianco, “M’ILLUMINO D’IMMENSO”, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Mumbai, Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru. These works are produced by Fondazione Egri CRID with EgriBiancoDanza Company, in partnership with Fondazione CROSS and with support from MiC, Regione Piemonte, Fondazione CRT.

“M’illumino d’immenso” is one of the most well-known lines of hermetic italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti. This performance created by Raphael Bianco is an almost anthological collection of choreographic fragments —evocative and mysterious. It is a work split in 3 chapter with a dancing poet and his visions expressing  fullness of being in its many meanings: brief choreographic events in which contemplation and the active exploration of physical and metaphysical dimensions of reality reveal different perceptions and interpretations of the concept of illumination and its ability to generate harmony between body and spirit.

CHAPTER 1
BECOME OCEAN
When I saw the ocean for the first time, on the beach of Kovalam in Kerala, I was overwhelmed with emotion, pervaded by the roar of the waves. It felt like meeting a friend I had long imagined since childhood: standing on the shore, I could not hold back my tears, I embraced the tide and became the ocean… immense.

CHAPTER 2
DIALOGO CON L’OMBRA (DIALOGUE WITH THE SHADOW)
My shadow is the mirror, the reflection—negative or positive—of my emotions, desires, impulses. A dialogue between two mysterious dimensions of my being, a confrontation that sometimes wounds me, perhaps because it blindly, awkwardly, stubbornly, desperately seeks harmony. How wonderful it is to rediscover the quiet of the spirit.

CHAPTER 3
PROMISED LAND
We walk without rest toward a mirage that is our only certainty. We leave behind what has been taken from us; memories are indelibly etched in our eyes. That small or large house—our homeland—grows ever more distant: nostalgia hardens our hearts… We seek only the gentle sensation of surrendering ourselves to a space of our own: without fear, embraced by the soft caress of our one and only soil.

Raphael Bianco
Raphael Bianco, born in Mumbai, is a trained dancer and choreographer with diverse expertise in both classical and contemporary dance. His studies in choreographic composition included the theories of Laban, guided by renowned mentors Susanna Egri and Karin Wahener. He has performed with the Norwegian Contemporary Dance Company Carte Blanche and had a brief experience with the Ensemble of Micha Van Hoecke. Currently, he dances with the Ballet du Nord, which is the National Choreographic Centre of Roubaix in France. In 1999, Raphael returned to Italy and co-founded the Compagnia EgriBiancoDanza with Susanna Egri. As a choreographer, he embraces eclecticism as his artistic philosophy, dedicating each project to unique poetic and aesthetic explorations. Recently, however, his work has become more focused, abstract, and visionary, emphasizing the infinite possibilities of the body and movement. Raphael draws inspiration from political and social themes as well as the depths of the human soul, placing human experience at the center of his choreographic investigations.

Compagnia EgriBiancoDanza
Compagnia EgriBiancoDanza, directed by Susanna Egri and Raphael Bianco, was founded in 1999. The company builds on over thirty years of experience from its predecessor, “I Balletti di Susanna Egri.” It is distinguished by a repertoire of works that embody social and spiritual values, created by Raphael Bianco and various choreographers from both the Italian and international artistic scenes. EgriBiancoDanza reflects key characteristics of the Fondazione Egri per la Danza, including curiosity, origin and innovation, as well as research and sharing—values that are essential for all the company’s artists. The company consists of accomplished dancers with extensive professional experience and boasts a robust repertoire that includes theatrical performances, installations, and site-specific works.
