Sparks - Mahabharata Opera Project

As part of Attakkalari India Biennial 2024, the grand world preview of Sparks - Mahabharata Opera Project, produced by Kama Productions with Ensemble MusikFabrik, in collaboration with Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, presents a unique musical theatre experience based on the revered Indian epic Mahabharata. Set to the composition of maestro Riccardo Nova, directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti and choreographed by Jayachandran Palazhy, the 70-minute production promises an enthralling display of artistic brilliance. This contemporary interpretation of selected sections of Mahabharata embarks on a European tour afterwards, gracing the esteemed Roma Europa Festival among others. 

Sparks - Mahabharata Opera Project is promoted by Alain Danielou Foundation and brought to you by Kama Productions, Ensemble MusikFabrik and Fattore K, in collaboration with Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts and Quattrox4, supported by the Consolato Generale d’Italia Bangalore, the Goethe Institut, and Unione Induista Italiana, with the patronage of ISMEO.

RICCARDO NOVA is a renowned italian musician and composer. He graduated in flute and composition at the Conservatorio di Milano and at the Siena Academy. His music is performed by some of the most important world ensembles, including Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble L’Itinéraire , Ictus Ensemble, Ensemble MusikFabrik. Since 1993 Nova has repeatedly lived in South India in order to study both music and Sanskrit, thus starting an extensive collaboration with several south Indian top musicians: Mysore manjunath, BC Manjunath, Varija Sree, Guru Prsanna between others. In 2003 he composed the music for MA di Akram Khan. In 2006 he collaborated with PAN SONIC and created Thirteen@terror genereting deity for symphony orchestra and techno group, selected at the International Rostrum of Composers (Paris, 2007).In 2011 IPNOS (production Accademia Della Scala and Italian Embassy India) was premiered in Mumbai and in New Delhi as part of the celebrations for the Italian 150 years unity anniversary. In 2012 he composed the music for Nineteen Mantras with Shantala Shivalingappa. In 2014 he received a three year grant from the FAD foundation in order to work on the Mahabharata Opera project, In 2018 The Essen Philarmonie commissioned a concert version of of the Mahabharata first act which was premiered by the ensemble MusikFabrik and conducted by Peter Rundel in October 2022.

GIORGIO BARBERIO CORSETTI Director, author and actor, has been exploring for decades the boundary between theater and the other disciplines of the scene through his shows: visual arts, poetry, writing, music, circus arts, video art, dance. He has worked on texts by Kafka, Goethe, Kleist, Ovid, Shakespeare, Pirandello, Chretien de Troyes, Labiche, Renaissance and Baroque painting, contemporary drama, Barker, Dimitriades, Lohle, the melodrama of Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini, Guarnieri, Adams, Hoffenbach, Auber. During his career he has directed numerous operas and projects on an international scale with his own company and with other European theaters (La Fenice di Venezia, Teatro Alla Scala, Mariinsky Theatre, Théâtre du Châtelet, Opera de Lille, Odeon , Comedie Française, Theater National de Strasbourg, Festival d’Avignon, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Latvian National Opera di Riga, Tokyo Festival). As part of the Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 project, Abitare l’Opera, has signed a new production of Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro M ascagni spread throughout the area. He was Director of the Theater section of the Venice Biennale; and consultant for dance and theater of the Auditorium Musica per Roma and Artistic Director of the Teatro di Roma Teatro Nazionale

Jayachandran Palazhy

JAYACHANDRAN PALAZHY - Founder and Artistic Director of Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts is an internationally sought after dancer and choreographer at the forefront of the contemporary Indian movement arts scene. A Physics graduate from Kerala, Jayachandran trained in India in Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Indian folk dances and the martial art form of Kalarippayattu. Jayachandran trained at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School in London where he also studied Classical Ballet, Tai Chi, Capoeira and African Dance. While in the U.K. he established the Imlata Dance Company and was awarded the Barclays New Stage Award. As choreographer Jayachandran his collaborations with international artists have resulted in unique multimedia dance productions, involving digital arts and interactive technology. His productions have received widespread critical acclaim and toured extensively internationally and within India. He has led several artistic residencies, and delivered many lecture demonstrations on a range of allied subjects related to movement arts. Jayachandran was invited as a respondent for seminars and residencies in Switzerland (by the Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council), in London (at the South Bank Centre), China (to lead a workshop on “Tradition and Innovation”), Germany (by the International Tanzmesse nrw & the Free University of Berlin), France (by the French Embassy for the Biennale de Lyon), Israel (by the Suzanne Dellal Centre), Japan (by the Kobe – Asia Contemporary Dance Festival), South Korea (for a collaboration with Dance Theatre CcadoO), Sweden (by the Museum of World Cultures and the Swedish School of Textiles) and the U.S. (for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival)

Born in 1973, Riccardo Biadene graduated with honors in philosophy in Bologna. He directed the documentaries “Come un uomo sulla terra” (Italy, 2008, Best Five David Donatello awards), “Marino Mazzacurati” (Italy, 2010), “Azezana, Kabul” (Afghanistan, 2011), “Alain Danielou The Labyrinth of a Life ” (India, 2017). Since 2006 he has been artistic director of FAD Alain Daniélou Foundation https://www.fondationalaindanielou.org/it/ - for which he directs the main Festival of Indian arts and culture in Italy, the SummerMela (2013-2023). Artistic Director of the Festivals “Cinema della realtà” (Officine, Rome, 2009), “Portello River Festival” (Padua, 2010-11), distribution festival CINEMA.DOC (Venice, Rome, Turin, Florence, Salina, 2010), “Festival Isola Edipo Re” and Prize for Inclusion Edipo Re, Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival (2018-19). Since 2009 he has been on the jury for the David di Donatello and Professional Award Doc It. In 2016 he founded Kama Productions.

Mahabharata Opera Project will comprise 3 acts of 65 minutes each. The booklet is composed mostly of Sanskrit texts taken from the Mahabharata and some fundamental mantras taken from the Yajurveda and the Rigveda.
