Attakkalari in association with British Council will present Time Frames. 100 school children from Delhi Public School, Kanakapura; Parikrama Foundation, GEAR Foundation, Bangalore School of Speech and Drama and Attakkalari's Community Class are working with dancers from Attakkalari's Repertory Dance Company and the Australian-British, media artist Margie Medlin to create a performative installation. The project focuses on introducing the students to cultures across the world through the idea of travelling around the world through different time zones and cultures as well as a cross-disciplinary arts practice that combines both movement and visual arts in a performance. Time Frames will be incorporated into the class structure of each of the participating schools for a duration of thirty hours between Mon 26 November, 2012 and Mon 21 Jan, 2013.
Time Frames begins with the idea of travelling around the world through different and time zones and cultures. Five geographic locations and time zone shifts were chosen - Christchurch, New Zealand to Tokyo, Japan; Shanghai, China to Mumbai, India; Nairobi, Kenya to Cairo, Egypt; Dakar, Senegal to Dublin, Ireland and Havana, Cuba to Pago Pago, Samoa. Each group is assigned two dancers from Attakkalari's Repertory Dance Company and a specific time zone. Together - the students, dancers and Medlin - share ideas of the world and explore methods of communicating their imaginations and dreams through dance and visual media. These ideas will be communicated through different dance styles, encompassing diverse cultures through their history and artistic expressions. Time Frames ponders the question of the future of life on earth and how choices made now can influence the future. Though, this project germinates from the ephemeral concept of time travel, it uses time travel as a metaphor for the free rein of the imagination. And therefore, it stresses on each participant contributing their own interests and understanding of a particular time zone's culture and history to the choreographic content, which forms the framework / guideposts for the tangential routes taken.
